FAQ

Miao Mi, also known as 妙米频道, is a Chinese (Mandarin) entertainment and education ('edutainment') service with over 500 videos-on-demand specifically created for kids ages 3 to 6. Miao Mi is also the name of the VOD service’s mascot – a curious and adventurous young cat who loves to learn and play! Mandarin Chinese is his favorite subject, and he enjoys exploring the world with his friends.

Miao Mi is available in both English and Chinese (Mandarin).

In the United States, Mandarin immersion is an educational model that provides academic instruction in English and Mandarin. By writing and dubbing each episode in Mandarin and again in English (without translations or subtitles, using appropriate character voices), Miao Mi provides high-quality, entertaining, immersive experiences in both languages. The English versions are what kids in Asia watch to learn English, in the same way that English-speaking kids in this country can watch the Mandarin versions to learn Mandarin.

For parents who might want to enter their child in a Mandarin immersion program in kindergarten or first grade, watching Miao Mi will give their child an excellent head start.

Miao Mi offers an excellent way to support language learning, and provides a Mandarin language immersion approach to learning a new language.

First, introduce your child to basic Mandarin vocabulary with Miao Mi Classroom (vocabulary words are also spoken in English). Then watching the animated series in Mandarin will help reinforce the use of vocabulary in a highly entertaining way (more engaging than flashcards).

The engaging storylines and character dialogue provide conversational, spoken Mandarin in context, at a level that a young child can relate to and understand. Exposure to spoken language in context accelerates learning and improves fluency, especially with a tonal language like Mandarin.¹

Children are able to learn new vocabulary from hearing language in context, and children without any Mandarin language instruction may pick up spoken Mandarin from watching the shows. And since they can also view the same episode in English, over time, they can make connections by watching episodes in both languages. The English versions will also be a helpful preview for non-Mandarin speaking parents.

There are excellent resources for learning basic Mandarin vocabulary, and prior exposure to Mandarin will help a child learn the language more quickly. Miao Mi is an additional resource designed to provide immersive language exposure for children who are learning Chinese (Mandarin) without the need to travel overseas.

Each program is carefully selected to offer a fun and engaging learning environment to provide the best possible opportunity for kids to absorb valuable language skills. Using Miao Mi as an entertaining supplemental resource extends the language learning experience parents may already be offering their child, and may become the “reward” their child enjoys.²

The programs on Miao Mi are appropriate for young children ages 3 to 6 years old. Miao Mi is also suitable for older children who are interested in learning Chinese (Mandarin) and cartoons. Kindergarteners and first graders who are in Mandarin Immersion programs can also reinforce their Mandarin vocabulary by watching the Mandarin videos of award-winning shows suitable for older kids such as Star Babiesand Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf.

Miao Mi is already available in Indonesia, Singapore and the United States, and will be available in other countries soon.

In the United States, Miao Mi is available on the app store (here), Amazon Channels (here) and will be soon available on Google Play

Miao Mi is currently available on all iOS and Android devices, as well as Apple TV and Roku. The minimum operating system requirements are as follows:
iOS: iOS 8
Android: jelly bean (4.1)

If you purchase Miao Mi through an individual app store account, your Miao Mi account will work across all devices linked to that account (e.g. if you purchase Miao Mi with your Apple ID you can use Miao Mi across all iOS devices using the same Apple ID. Similarly, if you purchase on Android, you will be able to access across all devices linked to your Google Play account). Unfortunately, you cannot access your Miao Mi account across operating systems. So, for example, if you were to purchase Miao Mi on Roku, you would not then be able to watch Miao Mi videos on your Android or Apple device.
